MACHRIHANISH GOLF CLUB - Golf for Two |

The small village of Machrihanish is situated on the western side of the remote Kintyre Peninsula; this is where the sky is big, the sunsets are dramatic and the air has been warmed by the Gulf Stream. Nearby Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, but today only the Springbank distillery remains in full operation.
Machrihanish is well known throughout the world as a first class natural links course. Machrihanish is rated # 49 of “The 100 Greatest Courses in the British Isles,” by Golf World International. It's first hole is regarded by many as “the greatest opening hole in the world of golf.”
Every visitor is struck by the natural beauty of the links and the friendly attitude of the members who welcome golfers from across the globe who have come to play this unique course. Described in 1878 by Old Tom Morris as 'specifically designed by the Almighty for playing golf' the course presents golfers with a challenging and spectacular opening drive across Machrihanish Bay. As noted, this opening hole, played across the ocean, is regarded by experts as one of the finest anywhere in the world.
But Machrihanish is not just about one great opening hole – the front nine is exceptional and the entire experience is magical. The greens are firm, fast, true and are positioned in the most varied of locations. Some are sunk in punchbowls while others are on a raised plateau or flattened dune tops. There are blind tee shots, fabulous sea views, undulating rippling fairways and exciting rugged dunes. Over time, little has been changed to disturb the natural scenic beauty and inspiring challenge of this delightful course.
The inward nine holes are no less demanding as they stretch back home against the backdrop of the Kintyre hills. Two par fives and three tricky par threes have to be negotiated until, within sight of the clubhouse, the Machrihanish burn has to be driven while avoiding the out-of-bounds which borders the final two holes. With the variable strength and direction of the wind, the course can provide a completely new challenge each time it is played. The undulating links of Machrihanish is perhaps the outstanding example of a course, that, had it not been so isolated on the tip of the Kintyre peninsula, would undoubtedly have been the venue for many great golf tournaments.
A stop for refreshment in the relaxed, informal atmosphere of the clubhouse while watching the sun set over Islay will complete the golfing experience of a lifetime. You have to make an extra special effort to get to Machrihanish, but it is worth it. The welcome is extraordinarily friendly and the golf is extraordinary. Expect to leave this place with a broad smile on your face.
